Budget Travel has been awarding the title of the coolest small town in America for 10 years now, and this time around the honor goes to Grand Marais, Minnesota, a community with just over 13 hundred residents.

The scenic locale lies on the shores of Lake Superior adjacent to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

It was selected through a 3-step process that involved gathering nominations, the selecting of finalists, and public voting.

Nearly 400 towns were proposed, but only 15 made it to the final voting stage.

Grand Marais commanded over 30 percent of the more than 100 thousand votes cast.

Others that got top rankings include Chincoteague, Virginia, Hillsborough, North Carolina, and Allegan, Michigan, which came in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, respectively.

5th place was awarded to Washington, a North Carolina town with a population of just over 9 thousand 7 hundred residents.

Last fall, readers of Budget Travel were asked to submit towns they thought deserving of the title 'America's Coolest'.

Requirements put forth by the magazine include that the area be populated by no greater than 10,000 people, offers good food, and shows a combination of community enthusiasm and a vibrant arts scene.
